Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, following acts of intimidation against the security forces since 1 March, (a) how many people have been arrested, (b) how many people have been charged and (c) what the charges were; and if there have been any resulting convictions.

Mr. Scott

[pursuant to his reply, 6 May 1986, c. 37]: During the period 1 March to 5 May, 172 people were arrested on suspicion of involvement in acts of intimidation against members of the security forces. Of these, 70 were charged. The charges included arson, throwing petrol bombs, possession of an offensive weapon, assault on police, attempted intimidation and criminal damage. The majority of those charged have yet to have their cases brought before the courts. Two people have so far been convicted.
