HC Deb 22 May 1986 vol 98 cc308-9W
Dr. Marek

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if, pursuant to the answer of the 19 May, he is prepared to estimate what proportion of the £107 million of worth of drugs that was seized was imported at points other than recognised points of entry; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Brooke

I regret that this information is not readily available and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.

The additional resources which have been allocated to mobile units, to the development of local intelligence and to more drugs investigation staff are intended not only to reinforce controls at recognised points of entry but also to increase Customs effectiveness outside these places. The recently announced Customs drugs hotline is also aimed at encouraging the public to assist Customs in these more remote areas.
