HC Deb 22 May 1986 vol 98 c305W
Mr. Latham

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he has lodged any recent protest with the Khomeini regime in Iran about the treatment of the Baha'i community, following recent reports of the stoning to death of a 15-year-old; and whether he will also raise such incidents with the United Nations.

Mr. Eggar

We are aware of recent press reports of renewed persecution of the Baha'is in Iran. We have asked our representatives in Tehran to make further inquiries.

The Government have consistently supported the efforts of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights to improve the treatment of Baha'is. We cosponsored the resolution on human rights in Iran at the last session of the United Nations General Assembly. We shall continue to express our concern about the human rights situation in Iran at every suitable opportunity.
