§ Lord GlenarthurThe number of motor cars in England and Wales which were licensed at 31st December 1985 was some 15,614,000; 1,697,000 were registered for the first time in 1985. The number of offences of theft or unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle recorded by the police in 1985 was some 367,400. Numbers of such offences are published annually in the Command Papers on Criminal Statistics, and most recently in a Home Office Statistical Bulletin, Number 4 of 86.
