How many motor cars were (a) registered, and (b) stolen last year.

The number of motor cars in England and Wales which were licensed at 31st December 1985 was some 15,614,000; 1,697,000 were registered for the first time in 1985. The number of offences of theft or unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle recorded by the police in 1985 was some 367,400. Numbers of such offences are published annually in the Command Papers on Criminal Statistics, and most recently in a Home Office Statistical Bulletin, Number 4 of 86.
