§ Mr. MajorThe total sum received by local authorities from the Exchequer in respect of expenditure on rent and rate rebates, rent allowance and housing benefit, either in the form of direct subsidy or taken into account in calculating entitlement to block grant, was for 1982–83 £1,523 million and for 1985–86 £4,521 million.
