§ Mr. Adleyasked the Prime Minister if she is satisfied with the co-ordination between the Department of Employment and the Department of Transport in connection with discussions over the future of the Settle-Carlisle railway line; and if she will make a statement.
§ The Prime MinisterMy right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Transport has a duty under the statutory procedures to take account of all relevant factors, including social and economic considerations, in reaching a decision on the British Railways Board's proposals for the Settle-Carlisle line. The Department of Employment, with its interest in tourism, as well as all other interested Government Departments, will be fully consulted before any decision is taken.
