HC Deb 08 May 1986 vol 97 cc222-3W
Mr. Dobson

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will list the nuclear reactors in Britain (a) with secondary containment and (b) without secondary containment.

Mr. Goodlad

I am advised that secondary containments are not considered necessary, given all the other safety features, including the massive and very strong primary pressure containments, at the existing gas cooled, Magnox and AGR nuclear power stations.

However, secondary containment is an integral feature of the design of the steam generating heavy water reactor at Winfrith, and the Prototype fast reactor at Dounreay.

Mr. Dobson

asked the Secretary of State for Energy when the Central Electricity Generating Board last made a safety assessment of a nuclear reactor of a type akin to that at Chernobyl; and when it was published.

Mr. Goodlad

I have asked the chairman of the Central Electricity Generating Board to write to the hon. Member.
