§ 74. Mr. Sedgemoreasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when he expects the next meeting to take place between his officials and members of the African National Congress; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mrs. ChalkerAs my right hon. and learned Friend told the house on 9 April, contacts between officials and the ANC are continuing as appropriate. The central purpose of such contact is to bring home to the ANC the importance of a suspension of violence on all sides in South Africa in order to promote a constructive dialogue.
§ 79. Mr. Pikeasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he includes leaders of the African National Congress among the genuine leaders with whom he believes the South African Government should establish a dialogue.
§ Mrs. ChalkerIt is not for us to say who should represent black citizens in South Africa in a dialogue with the South African Government. But the ANC is clearly a most important focus of black opinion.
