HC Deb 01 May 1986 vol 96 cc458-9W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Paymaster General whether he will estimate the number of people who are currently working on Sundays.

Mr. Lang

Preliminary results from the 1985 Labour force survey indicate that, in the spring of 1985, around 5.5 million people worked on one or more of the preceding four Sundays.

On a different basis, the Institute for Fiscal Studies has estimated that 4.1 million people worked regularly on Sundays and another 4.7 million worked occasionally on Sundays in 1984.
