HC Deb 27 March 1986 vol 94 c586W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will publish a table indicating for each local education authority in Wales what range of maintenance grants are paid to help students from their area undertake non-degree courses at technical colleges.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

Mandatory awards are available to help students attend designated courses: these include some non-degree courses such as those leading to a diploma of higher education or a BTEC higher national diploma. Details of the value of these awards for the current academic year are contained in the Department of Education and Science publication "Grants to Students—A Brief Guide 1985–86".

Local education authorities also have powers to make discretionary awards to support students on other courses. Any amounts paid under these powers are at the discretion of the individual local authority.
