asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many male and female prisoners, resepectively, were segregated (a) for good order and discipline and (b) for their own protection on any recent convenient date; and on the same date how many prisoners were contained in the special wings for such prisoners at Maidstone, Gloucester and Wakefield prisons.

The number of male sentenced prisoners segregated at 31 January 1985 (the most recent date for which information is available) was as follows(a) 93 for reasons of good order or discipline; (b) 542 for their own protection. Figures are not kept centrally for unconvicted or female prisoners. The number of persons in the special units at that date were as follows: Maidstone 98; Gloucester 76; Wakefield 24.
