asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many prisoners died in prisons in Scotland during each of the past five years for which records are available; what ages were the deceased; how many of such deaths were from natural causes; how many were from terminal illnesses; and, in respect of these, when he was notified that the prisoner was suffering from a terminal illness.

The numbers and ages of prisoners who died in penal establishments in Scotland in each of the past five years are as follows. Deaths from natural causes are indicated by an asterisk. None of the deaths was from a terminal illness. The figures do not include prisoners who died following transfer to an NHS hospital or following early release on medical grounds.

  • 1981 Four aged 17, 18, 24, 31.
  • 1982 Four aged 18, 19, 19, 42*.
  • 1983 Seven aged 18, 20, 26, 31, 34, 36, 55.
  • 1984 Six aged 17, 27, 35, 39, 48, 48*.
  • 1985 Ten aged 16, 17, 25, 26, 28*, 32, 38, 44*, 47, 49*.
