HC Deb 27 March 1986 vol 94 cc593-4W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what levels of organo-chlorine residues have been detected in rabbit, processed pork and poultry imported from the People's Republic of China; and what progress is presently being made in discussions between the Governments of the United Kingdom and the People's Republic of China in attempting to detect the source of chemical compounds in meat products in China.

Mrs. Fenner

The hon. Member will find the information requested in the report of the working party on pesticide residues (1982 to 1985) which was published on 4 March this year and is available in the Library of the House. The Chinese authorities were alerted to the working party's findings in April 1985 and officials from the state veterinary service visited the People's Republic of China in August 1985 and made recommendations for establishing a monitoring system for contaminants. Following further contacts between officials we are making arrangements for experts of both countries to meet to determine the cause of the contamination.
