Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what local education authorities (a) increased and (b) reduced their pupil-to-teacher ratios over the last two years for which figures are available for (i) primary, (ii) secondary schools and (iii) all schools; and which local education authorities have pupil-to-teacher ratios (1) below and (2) above the national average for primary, secondary and all schools.

Comparisons between January 1984 and 1985 of the primary, secondary and overall pupil-teacher ratios in each LEA in England are as follows. Also given is the equivalent comparisons between 1985 and the national average. In the table, plus signs indicate that pupil-teacher ratios have increased or are greater than the national average, and minus signs indicate the opposite.
