HC Deb 25 March 1986 vol 94 c440W
Mr. Best

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what plans he has for increasing support for multi-racial educational and training programmes within South Africa.

Mr. Raison

I am considering how we can increase our support for such programmes and my chief education adviser will visit South Africa next month to advise on this.

Mr. Best

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what support he gives through voluntary agencies for educational and training programmes for refugees from South Africa.

Mr. Raison

Our support for education and training for South African refugees is channeled not through voluntary agencies but through the United Nations educational training programme for Southern Africa (£50,000 this financial year) and the Commonwealth fund for technical co-operation (£60,000).

Mr. Best

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he has any plans for increasing educational provision for refugees from South Africa.

Mr. Raison

We are in discussion with the Commonwealth secretariat on the scope of a new Commonwealth training scheme, which might include some awards for refugee students.
