HC Deb 25 March 1986 vol 94 cc461-2W
Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what research and development is currently being carried out in his Department on the Blue Yeoman radar system; and what research and development is currently being carried out in his Department on the RABIES radar system.

Mr. Norman Lamont

The Blue Yeoman radar is an experimental facility at Royal Signals and Radar Establishment at Malvern, which has undergone a major improvement programme over the last two years. It is being used to carry out research into a number of topics relating to advanced radar techniques and systems which will be applicable to future long-range air defence.

The RABIES equipment is being used in conjunction with the Blue Yeoman radar for research into bistatic radar, where the transmitter and receiver are some distance apart. A successful start has recently been made to a trials programme involving aircraft targets.
