HC Deb 24 March 1986 vol 94 c327W
Mr. Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) what proportion of teachers of home economics in secondary schools in England are estimated to be (a) over 50 years of age and (b) over 40 years of age;

(2) what proportion of teachers of foreign languages in secondary schools in England are estimated to be (a) over 50 years of age and (b) over 40 years of age.

Mr. Chris Patten

The estimates that follow are derived from a survey of a sample of maintained secondary schools carried out by this Department in 1984.

England Full-time teachers teaching named subject in maintained secondary schools, 1984
Estimated percentage who were
(a) 50 years of age and over (b) 40 years of age and over age and over
Home economics 17 44
French 15 40
German 10 37
Spanish 9 34
Russian 17 53
Italian 19 36
Other modern languages 38 61
Classical languages 27 62

With the exception of home economics and French, the numbers of teachers of the subjects listed who are in particular age groups are relatively small. Percentages shown may therefore be subject to wide margins of sampling error. Small differences between percentages should therefore not be treated as significant.
