HC Deb 24 March 1986 vol 94 c346W
Mr. Best

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what support is available from Government sources for the development of rural areas in Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

A very extensive range of assistance is provided by the Government and their various agencies towards developments in rural Wales. I am today publishing a document which sets out in detail what is already on offer. The document also describes a new grant scheme (development of rural initiative, venture and enterprise—DRIVE) which is being introduced by the Welsh Development Agency and Mid Wales Development. One million pounds is being made available over the next two years for this scheme, the aim of which is to stimulate private sector investment in services, tourism related, leisure and craft projects in rural areas. The two agencies will consult and collaborate with the Wales Tourist Board in respect of applications which have a tourism dimension. Some to the existing schemes operated by the Welsh Development Agency and Mid Wales Develoment are also being extended or streamlined; and the total package is to be marketed under the label "Rural Enterprise". Government agencies will continue to work with local enterprise agencies where these exist. Efforts will also be made to establish on a pilot basis and in a few areas rural enterprise groups which will be encouraged to identify and bring forward ideas for development within their own communities. This new initiative underlines the commitment of the Government to the continued development of rural Wales.

A copy of the document being published today has been placed in the Library.
