HC Deb 24 March 1986 vol 94 cc337-8W
Mr. Chope

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what has been the cost to his Department in each of the last five years of paying for tickets to enable those who have been refused leave to enter the United Kingdom to return to their home country; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Waddington

I regret that this information is not available.

The total expenditure on removal of persons from the United Kingdom at public expense, including not only those refused leave to enter, but also those deported, or removed as illegal entrants, in each financial year since 1981–82 is as follows:

Expenditure (to nearest £1,000)
£
1981–82 555,000
1982–83 546,000
1983–84 581,000
1984–85 856,000

Arrangements have been made so that the expenditure on persons refused entry, and on the other categories mentioned above, will be separately identified from the beginning of the financial year 1986–87.
