HC Deb 24 March 1986 vol 94 c361W
Mr. Oakes

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make central locking devices compulsory on all new motor cars manufactured in Great Britain.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

No. Central locking is being considered by a committee of the British Standards Institution which is producing a standard on car security.

Mr. Oakes

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what discussions he is having with motor manufacturers with a view to separate panels of motor vehicles being indelibly marked for identification purposes as a security against theft.

Mr. Ridley

None. The marking of glass in new vehicles is, however, being considered by a committee of the British Standards Institution which is producing a standard on car security. I am not aware of any plans to extend this to other vehicle components.
