HC Deb 24 March 1986 vol 94 c335W
Dr. Glyn

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many visitors from the Indian sub-continent have failed to return home within the period specified on their entry clearance in the last 12 months.

Mr. Waddington

The information requested is not available.

Dr. Glyn

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make it his policy not to admit persons from the Indian sub-continent to the United Kingdom on either a permanent or a temporary basis without their first obtaining written permission from a United Kingdom post in the sub-continent; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Waddington

Any person who comes to the United Kingdom for settlement, including for marriage with a view to settlement must first obtain an entry clearance from a British mission abroad. People from the Indian sub-continent do not require entry clearance if they come here as visitors or students but they may apply abroad if they wish to establish before travelling whether they will prima facie qualify for admission on arrival. All immigration control arrangements are kept under continuous re-examination in the light of changing patterns of travel and traffic.
