§ Mr. D. E. Thomasasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what information he has on the overall formal effects on the constituent colleges of the University of Wales of the projected cut in University Grants Committee funding over the next five years.
§ Mr. WaldenThe suggested reduction in funding of 2 per cent. a year is a planning hypothesis adopted by the University Grants Committee to give it some flexibility in allocating resources between institutions and some room for manoeuvre in relation to future levels of inflation. The Government's expenditure plans for 1986–87 to 1988–89 provide for a reduction of about one per cent. a year compared with expected inflation over the same period. The future levels of funding for individual institutions, including the constituent colleges of the University of Wales will be decided by the UGC in the light of its current planning exercise and of the resources available. No decisions have yet been taken.
