Mr. Merchant

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the number of undergraduate students who are at present being sponsored at (a) universities, (b) polytechnics and (c) colleges of higher education by Her Majesty's forces; and what income they are receiving per annum under (i) the cadetship scheme and (ii) the bursary scheme.

Numbers of students subdivided into universities, polytechnics and colleges of higher education are not held centrally for the Royal Navy.

Figures exclude those sponsored and reading for degrees at the Royal Military College of Science.

Under the university cadetship scheme, students are commissioned to the appropriate service before beginning their further education and receive full service pay for the three-four years of their course. For the Army and Royal Air Force the following scale applies:

In the Royal Navy cadets serve for up to one year in the service before entering further education and they are therefore paid as serving officers as follows:
