HC Deb 20 March 1986 vol 94 c258W
Mr. Moynihan

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will make a statement on the current position of the teachers' pay dispute.

Sir Keith Joseph

There has now been a settlement of the 1985 pay claim giving teachers a 6.9 per cent. increase backdated to April last year and a further 1.6 per cent., or 8.5 per cent. in all, from the end of this month. Talks on 1986 and beyond (and covering pay levels, pay structure, appraisal and training, and teachers' duties and responsibilities) have begun under the independent panel appointed by ACAS. It is distressing that even so there has not been a full resumption of normal working in the schools.
