HC Deb 20 March 1986 vol 94 cc250-1W
Mr. Coombs

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will consider removing bleach from the list of permitted additives in white bread.

Mrs. Fenner

We have no plans to remove bleaching agents from the list of permitted additives in white bread.

None of the reports produced by the independent expert committees in recent years have recommended that flour bleaching agents should be removed from the list of permitted additives in white bread. The Bread and Flour Regulations 1984 which come into force on 1 July 1986 therefore continue the approval for the two flour bleaching agents permitted in white bread; the maximum quantity for benzoyl peroxide is also maintained, but a maximum quantity for chlorine dioxide is now to be introduced.
