HC Deb 19 March 1986 vol 94 c194W
Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what notice is given to (a) a prisoner and (b) a prisoner's relatives before a prisoner is moved or transferred.

Mr. Mellor

Where possible and where security considerations permit, a prisoner is given sufficient notice of a transfer to enable him to inform relatives by post. Where for any reason a prisoner has not had the opportunity to do this and he has a visiting order outstanding, he may ask on arrival at his new establishment for his prospective visitors to be immediately informed of his transfer by telephone at public expense. Where a visiting order is not outstanding, he is not allowed to have a telephone call made, but may be provided with a letter at public expense instead.
