HC Deb 19 March 1986 vol 94 c213W
Mr. Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the annual cost, in each year since 1970, to the National Health Service in Scotland of road traffic accidents; and what proportion is attributable to drunk driving offences.

Mr. Ancram

Using estimates produced by the Department of Transport for the costs of injury road accidents in Great Britain, the estimated cost of injury road accidents in Scotland to the National Health Service at 1984 prices was as follows:

£ million at 1984 prices
1970 16.7
1971 16.8
1972 17.0
1973 17.1
1974 16.0
1975 14.8
1976 15.0
1977 15.2
1978 16.0
1979 16.2
1980 15.4
1981 15.4
1982 15.7
1983 13.7
1984 14.0

No information is held centrally on the blood alcohol levels of drivers or riders killed in road accidents; it is not, therefore, possible to determine the proportion of costs attributable to drunk driving offences.
