HC Deb 19 March 1986 vol 94 cc221-2W
Mr. Stuart Holland

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimates he has made of the potential savings in time of on-train Customs and Excise procedures for passengers using the Channel fixed link.

Mr. Brooke

There are no such potential savings for the bulk of rail passengers on through routes to London who have nothing to declare. They will simply have to walk through the green channel at the proposed Waterloo terminal. However Customs are holding discussions with British Rail about passenger controls on other routes and no decisions have yet been taken.

Mr. Stuart Holland

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether specialist staff will be deployed to prevent the import of narcotics in connection with the proposed Waterloo terminal of the Channel fixed link.

Mr. Brooke

Yes, Customs officers deployed at the proposed Waterloo terminal will have exactly the same duties as for similar traffic elsewhere.
