HC Deb 18 March 1986 vol 94 c175W
45. Mr. O'Brien

asked the Paymaster General if he will make a statement on progress to date towards implementation of the two-year YTS.

Mr. Trippier

Progress towards setting up two-year YTS has been excellent. With the new programme due to begin in April, already some 86 per cent. of required places are definitely or likely to be provided. We aim to provide high quality training for young people of all abilities and circumstances and are well on the way to achieving this.

63. Mr. Hunter

asked the Paymaster General what recent representations he has received about the extended YTS scheme; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Trippier

We have received many representations on the shape and content of YTS. The new two-year programme has been widely welcomed. It is designed to meet the needs of industry and of young people, and will be a major advance for training in Britain.

Mr. Wainwright

asked the Paymaster General what is the latest estimate of the percentage of young people who can expect to go straight into full-time employment after completing a YTS; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Trippier

The Manpower Services Commission conducts a monthly follow-up survey of all young people leaving YTS. The latest results, covering young people who left between 1 April and 30 September 1985, show that 59 per cent. went straight into full-time work on completion of their YTS training. The survey also shows that 66 per cent. were in full-time work some three months after completing their training, with a further 4 per cent. in part time work and 3 per cent. in full-time education/training.
