asked the Paymaster General what has been the change in wage levels for the top 20 per cent. of workers since 1979 compared with the bottom 20 per cent.; and if he will make a statement.

Between April 1979 and April 1985 the level of gross weekly earnings exceeded by the top 20 per cent. of full-time adult employees increased by 97 per cent. for men and by 108 per cent. for women. Over the same period the level below which the earnings of the bottom 20 per cent. of full-time adults lay increased by 79 per cent. for men and by 86 per cent. for women.
