The average annual cost per in-patient in National Health Service mental handicap hospitals was £11,850 in 1984–85, the latest year for which this information is available.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many readmissions have taken place in hospitals for mentally handicapped people in each of the last six years; and for each year, if he will give a breakdown of readmissions according to the following age-bands: (a) under 16 years, (b) 16 to 19 years, (c) 20 to 24 years, (d) 25 to 30 years, (e) 30 to 40 years, (f) 40 to 50 years, (g) 50 to 60 years and (h) over 60 years.
