HC Deb 18 March 1986 vol 94 cc128-9W
Mr. Nicholas Baker

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what would be the cost of paying supplementary benefit to students in respect of the first three days of their holiday; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Newton

Unemployed claimants of supplementary benefit normally receive benefit from two days after their "signing day", which is usually designated according to the first letter of the claimant's surname. The period between the date of claim and the official signing day will therefore vary and no reliable estimate is possible of he cost of paying students from their date of claim. In cases of hardship, payments can be made under the urgent cases regulations during the period before the first benefit payment is made.
