HC Deb 18 March 1986 vol 94 c145W
Mr. Greg Knight

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will take steps to improve and expand both the quality and number of animal holding facilities at selected United Kingdom air and seaports; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Gummer

Holding facilities for animals subject to our rabies control arrangements are maintained at selected sea and airports by the port authorities, as recommended by the Waterhouse committee. Such facilities must conform with the Ministry's specifications and are regularly inspected.

Mr. Greg Knight

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many prosecutions have taken place in each year since May 1979 under the United Kingdom Transit of Animals (General) Order 1973.

Mr. Gummer

Statistics collected by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Home Department do not separately identify prosecutions under the Transit of Animals Order 1973 which applies to Great Britain. However, information available to my Ministry, which may be incomplete, indicates that the following numbers of prosecutions under the order were brought in the years in question:

Year number
1979 (full year) 16
1980 42
1981 37
1982 50
1983 45
1984 11
1985 (Jan-Aug) 7
