HC Deb 18 March 1986 vol 94 c114W
Sir John Biggs-Davison

asked the Prime Minister if she will make a statement about her meeting with the Afghan resistance leader Abdul Haq.

The Prime Minister

Mr. Abdul Haq gave me an account of the brave activities of the resistance in the war against the occupation of Afghanistan. He emphasised that the resistance would continue until the Afghan people were free to enjoy the right of self-determination and the refugees could return in honour and safety to their homes. I made clear the Government's full support for the efforts of the Afghan people to free themselves of foreign occupation as well as for the efforts of the United Nations Secretary General's representative to find a negotiated settlement on the basis of successive United Nations resolutions. I also made clear our belief that the key to such a settlement remains the withdrawal of the Soviet troops. Until then we will continue to give what help we can to the victims of the occupation.
