HC Deb 17 March 1986 vol 94 cc47-8W
52. Mr. Dickens

asked the Attorney-General if he will make it his policy to take over any private prosecutions initiated for sexual offences against children if the police have at first decided not to prosecute on the grounds that the only prosecution witness would be the child concerned.

The Attorney-General

The policy of the Director of Public Prosecutions with regard to taking over private prosecutions is set out in the answer given by my hon. and learned Friend the Solicitor-General to the hon. Member for Workington (Mr. Campbell-Savours), on 28 October 1985 at column 297. The Director will not take over and continue any prosecution unless he is satisfied as to the sufficiency of the evidence to support the charge preferred.
