asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many overseas students have been financed (a) by the Overseas Development Administration and (b) from other sources in his Department in each year 1979 to 1985 to study in Britain compared with the total number of overseas students studying in Britain in each of the same years.

Mr. Raison

The number of overseas students in the United Kingdom under overseas Development Administration and other Foreign and Commonwealth Office support schemes on 31 December 1979 was 8,449, compared with a total overseas student population of 87,800. The comparable estimated figures for 31 December 1985 were 9,192 and 55,500 respectively. The information is as follows:
