HC Deb 17 March 1986 vol 94 cc10-1W
Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list, by incident, the number of persons in the N district area of the Metropolitan police who have been charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and subsequently had the charge withdrawn.

Mr. Giles Shaw

I am informed by the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that this information could be provided only at disproportionate cost.

Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department on what occasions CS gas containers, riot shields or water cannons have been issued to N district of the Metropolitan police.

Mr. Giles Shaw

I understand from the Commissioner that no CS gas containers or water cannon have been issued to N district. All districts in the Metropolitan police hold a small number of riot shields.

Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department on how many occasions since January 1984 police have been brought into N district from other divisions.

Mr. Giles Shaw

Between 1 January 1984 and 13 March this year, officers from other districts were deployed on N district on 72 occasions.

Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the number of occasions that firearms have been issued to police in N division by month since January 1984.

Mr. Giles Shaw

The available records show the number of police operations in which firearms were issued, rather than the number of separate occasions; and they are maintained on an annual basis and could not, without disproportionate expense, be shown on a monthly basis. The available information, provided by the Commissioner, is as follows:

Police operations in N district in which firearms wre issued:—

1984 39
1985 32
