HC Deb 17 March 1986 vol 94 cc22-3W
30. Mr. Evennett

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what steps he plans to further reduce the direct cost to the ratepayer of London Regional Transport.

Mr. David Mitchell

Government objectives given to LRT in 1984 set tough targets to reduce real unit costs progressively and hence the burden of revenue support on the ratepayers. LRT is meeting or bettering these targets. Ratepayers have already benefitted by a 1p in the pound reduction in their rates for 1986–87. We have approved higher levels of investment and given priority to cost-saving projects. So ratepayers face the welcome prospect of a continuing reduction in the cost of running London Regional Transport.
