Mr. Coombs

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will consider introducing regulations to impose maximum amounts of individual additives in food products in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Gummer

The Food Advisory Committee keeps the use of additives under review. The committee is currently considering a review of the colouring matter in food and one of the issues which it is addressing is whether there should be maximum permitted levels.

Mr. Coombs

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will arrange for a list of all the flavours currently used in the United Kingdom food supply to be placed in the Library, showing naturally derived, nature identical and synthetic flavours separately.

Mr. Gummer

No such list is available but we are participating in discussions in the European Community, one purpose of which is to enable the European Commission to prepare a list of food flavours used in the Community. In 1981 the Council of Europe published a list of "Flavouring Substances and Natural Sources of Flavourings" (ISBN 2–7160–0081–6).
