HC Deb 17 March 1986 vol 94 cc18-9W
15. Mr. Soames

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what recent action he has taken to provide for the security of travellers at airports; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Michael Spicer

I have given security a lot of attention in recent months. In particular, I attended the International Civil Aviation Organisation's council meeting in June last year, which resulted in a tightening up of the international security standards and recommendations in annex 17 to the Chicago convention; I have carried out a thorough review of United Kingdom aviation security measures; I have arranged for greater security to be provided for the E1 A1 operation at Heathrow and Manchester airports; and I have taken steps to ensure that the new terminal at Stansted and the redeveloped terminal 3 at Heathrow will incorporate suitable security features.
