§ 42. Mr. Wallaceasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how much he estimates, in percentage terms, research and development in defence industry related areas will change in cash terms between the financial years 1983–84 and 1987–88.
§ Mr. ButcherMost of industry is relevant to defence, but there are no clear definitions of defence industry related areas. In cash terms, intramural and extramural expenditure by the Department of Trade and Industry on aircraft, electronics, microwave standards and space is forecast to increase by 4 per cent. between 1983–84 and 1987–88. Expenditure on space will be with the British National Space Centre at Farnborough, which incorporates parts of the Royal Aircraft Establishment.
