HL Deb 12 March 1986 vol 472 cc687-8WA
Lord Diamond

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will bring up to date the two sets of figures contained in the answer given by Lord Cockfield on 9th November 1983 (col. 951–2) in connection with real personal disposable income per head and real average post-tax earnings.

The Secretary of State for Employment (Lord Young of Graffham)

The latest estimates are as follows:

INDEX NUMBERS (1979–80 = 100)
Real Personal Disposable Income Per head Real Average Post-Tax Earnings of Employees
1979–80 100.0 100.0
1980–81 100.1 100.5
1981–82 97.3 97.3
1982–83 98.0 98.8
1983–84 100.9 101.8
1984–85 103.1 103.4
Further details of real personal disposable income (RPDI) per head may be found on page 14 of Economic Trends.

The estimates for RPDI per head are derived from national accounting data and refer to the personal sector as a whole. They are not directly comparable with real average post-tax earnings of employees, which omit other income such as child benefit, interest on savings, etc., and do not cover the self-employed.
