HC Deb 10 March 1986 vol 93 c344W
Ms. Harman

asked the Paymaster General if he will undertake an advertising campaign to warn the public of the dangers of open flue gas heaters in bathrooms; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lang

The British Gas Corporation tells me that it already runs publicity campaigns targeted particularly at areas where the remaining open flue gas heaters are mainly found. The number of heaters is diminishing and there are now very few incidents. Since 1980 British Gas regions have continuously advertised the need to have regular servicing. In addition, British Gas can stop dangerous appliances being used. The Health and Safety Executive has widely circulated its leaflet "The Gas Regulations for Everybody's Safety" which stresses the importance of competent servicing for gas appliances. The executive is also preparing a television reminder for public service broadcast.
