§ Mr. Wallerasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the chief constable of West Yorkshire on the progress of inquiries into, and charges arising from, the alleged illegal activities of members of extremist organisations and on the possible links between such organisations and the Ulster Defence Association; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Giles Shaw[pursuant to his reply, 24 February, c. 414]: The chief constable of West Yorkshire informs me 238W that his force investigates thoroughly offences such as racial attacks and incitement to racial hatred which are reported to it, and in doing so takes due account of the possible involvement of extremist organisations in such activities. Proceedings are brought where the evidence justifies it.
The Ulster Defence Association is not a proscribed organisation in any part of the United Kingdom, so that links with it and membership of it are not in themselves unlawful.
