§ Mr. GummerThe new quotas introduced in order to help fishermen by protecting their future livelihood. The common fisheries policy provides a successful means of conserving fish stocks and thus preserving jobs. The reduction in the cod quota for 1986, which was based on scientific advice, was necessary to protect the longer term viability of the stock and therefore the incomes of fishermen. Various structural measures exist within the common fisheries policy to help the industry adjust to changes in the availability of resources. Charges for entering ports and landing catches are a local matter.
