§ 35. Mr. Torneyasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food which research he plans to undertake to produce an increased proportion of wheat suitable for breadmaking in the United Kingdom.
§ Mr. GummerSome 82 per cent. of the wheat milled in the United Kingdom in 1984–85 was home-grown, compared with 54 per cent. in 1979–80. My Department currently funds a significant amount of reseach and development to improve the bread-making quality of wheat, and increasing emphasis is to be given to this aspect of research in the future.
