asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he has yet completed his consideration of the contents of the guidelines issued by the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals on freedom of speech and lawful assembly; and if he will make a statement.

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he has yet reached a conclusion as to whether the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals guidelines on freedom of speech and lawful assembly raise questions he would wish to discuss with the committee.

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he has completed his consideration of the guidelines for the protection of freedom of speech in universities issued by the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Walden

My right hon. Friend recently discussed the guidelines with the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals. As a result of that discussion the committee chairman has written to reiterate the universities' unequivocal and forthright support for freedom of speech, and making it clear that nothing in their guidance was intended to afford a pretext for cancelling a meeting other than in the most exceptional circumstances.
