59. Mr. Fisher

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many local education authorities budgeted to reduce their expenditure on maintenance in real terms in 1984–85.

Mr. Dunn

Detailed information on LEA expenditure in 1984–85 is not yet available. In 1983–84, 32 LEAs spent less in real terms, as measured by the GDP deflator, on the repair and maintenance of school and colleges, than in 1982–83. The majority of LEA raised their spending in real terms between the two years; nationally the increase was 8 per cent.
