Mr. Frank Field

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will estimate the number of claimants who, as a result of the level of work expenses disregard, find (a) that their incomes would be no higher in work than out of it and (b) their incomes would be less than £5 higher in work than out of it.

Mr. Newton

I regret it is not possible to make these estimates as no information is available about claimants' work expenses, apart from that mentioned in my reply to the hon. Member on 3 March, or about their potential earnings in full-time work.
