Mr. Bruce

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many orders have been made under section 17 of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 to amend electoral areas; and how many were for (a) regional councils, (b) district councils, (c) island councils and (d) a combination of regional or island and district councils, respectively.

Mr. John MacKay

Twenty-one orders have been made under section 17 of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 to amend the electoral areas constituted following the initial review by the Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland under schedule 5 of the Act of the electoral arrangements for regions, islands areas and districts throughout Scotland. Of these, three affect the electoral areas of regional councils, three affect the electoral areas of district councils, and 15 affect the electoral areas of both regional and district councils. None relate to islands area councils.
